What is The Pressure Vessel
Research Council? PVRC
is part of the not-for-profit Welding Research Council,
Inc. (WRC). PVRC was formed as part of The WRC in
1945 to continue the mode of cooperative research
begun during World War II. Its goal was to coordinate
and extend research on various aspects of pressure
vessel technology under the direction of several
Volunteer Committees. The
current activities in PVRC include:
- Bolted Flanged Connections
- Dynamic Analysis and Testing
- Elevated Temperature Design
- Fatigue and Fracture
- Piping, Nozzles and Vessels,
Plastic Analysis
- Failure Modes of Components
- NDE
- Weld Metals and Welding
Procedures
- Flaw Evaluation
- Continued Modernization
of Codes

Results of research and development are published in
Welding Research Council Bulletins. Usually, ten such
Bulletins are published in a year. Many Bulletins are
enduring reference documents on technical issues or
Design and Fitness for Service Code Criteria. PVRC has
published over 480 Bulletins to-date, and most are still
available.
Much of PVRC's research supports Codes and Standards
activities, such as those of ASME, API, ASTM and TEMA.
PVRC Committees are staffed with participants from industry,
research laboratories, universities, and standards organizations.
Research is conducted by project investigators under
the direction of an industry-oriented volunteer committee.
The responsible committee provides technical guidance.
Approval is attained by a consensus voting process.
This volunteer mechanism for conducting research fosters
valuable networking among members--aof significant value
of membership in PVRC. Being a member of PVRC provides
the opportunity for early knowledge and influence over
technology development.
PVRC's Meetings are associated with its conference on
timely subjects and are generally open to the public.
They are held three times per year, usually late winter,
spring and fall. Check PVRC's web site www.forengineers.org/pvrc
for the next meeting times and locations.
